The art deco Annason Apartment Building in Shorewood
Name of building: Annason Apartment Building.
Year completed: 1930.
Architect: Julius Leiser.
Location: 2121 East Capitol Drive.
Architectural style: Art deco. Art moderne.
Observations: Architectural historian H. Russell Zimmerman notes,
One of the finest moderne structures in Milwaukee, this 60-unit apartment [is] a very well proportioned example of the art deco or modern style popular in the 1930s... this building is in almost original condition. The buff pressed brick is trimmed with high glaze black terra-cotta, polished granite, aluminum, and leaded glass.
History: Julius Leiser and Charles F. J. Holst were in partnership from 1903 until Holst's death in 1924, and specialized in designing apartment buildings, churches, and residences. The partners designed St. Marcus Lutheran Church in the Brewer's Hill neighborhood, and Leiser later designed Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Racine, Evangelical Lutheran Gethsemane Church in Milwaukee, and Saron Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2830 West Hadley Street in Milwaukee.
